Opening a GMC Online Account

GMC tailors each application for registration to the person who is making it. They have a simple "Find your Route" quiz that will lead you to the right information. To get the questionnaire, please go to the section for Application Registration. You need to do all of these things to get to your specific instructions, where you can find the right link to set up your GMC Online account.

Find your route

In the very first question, you are asked if you have already signed up. If you're not, the answer is definitely "No."

"What would you like to do?" is the next question. If you want to take the PLAB route, you should definitely fill out an application for registration with a licence to practise.

Then questions about:

  • Where did you get your main medical degree?
  • Where is your home country?
  • Have you done a work-study programme?

If you are in the middle of your internship, the answer is "Yes." After your internship, you would try to get GMC registered. We're just looking for the right directions for the path you'll be taking.

  • Where did your internship take place?
  • Which one of these can you show proof for?

If you want to go the PLAB route, you will eventually be able to prove that you passed the PLAB test. So you chose that to help you figure things out.

That will end your questionnaire and show you the advice that's right for you based on the answers you just gave. To see your full guidance, click on "Read your guidance." I really think you should read each of these to learn everything you need to know about the GMC registration application process. But right now, our main goal is to set up an online account with GMC.

Click "I'm ready to sign up."

If this seems really complicated and you are taking PLAB tests to get registered, you can just go to the GMC PLAB page and click "set up an account."

Set up a GMC online account

The link takes you to a new page that asks for your information as a "New User."

So, here is the list of information you need to set up an account before you sit down. If a question doesn't have a red asterisk next to it, you can skip it.

  • I think it's safe to choose from the list of Dr.
  • If you don't have a last name, put a dot or a dash in that box, and you'll be able to move on.
  • DOB
  • Gender
  • Email address
  • Number of Phone: You can also put your cell phone number here.
  • Password for a GMC account: Help with the password: It needs at least one capital letter, one small letter, and a number. At least 7 characters should be used.

After filling these information, proceed to the next page to fill up diversity details.

Please look at the picture here to figure out what race you are. If you are Pakistani, you fall into the first category, "Asian/Asian British," and the second, "Pakistani."

Then click next to go to the next and final page

Give your current address. The organization name and department are not required, so you can leave them blank. Lastly, you can change your address as needed when you pass the PLABs and apply for GMC registration.

Some tips on how to fill out the Primary Medical Qualification part.

  • Choose your country and let the page refresh on its own for a while. (This will bring up the awarding bodies that are available in your country.
  • DO NOT put the name of your medical school in the field that says "awarding body." It's very clear that you need to click the symbol to choose. If you click that, you'll go to a search field. Click the drop-down menu next to "Find with" to search by either the name of an organisation or a city. Then, in the Starting with box, type the first part of the name of your medical school or city. Sometimes it's hard to find your medical school here, but don't give up. It just takes a little bit of work.
  • If, after hours of trying different search terms, you still can't find your awarding body, you'll have to send an email to the GMC explaining that your medical college is listed in WDOMS but not in their list. Don't forget to say that! They'll tell you what to do next in a clear way.
  • The same goes for the Qualifier. To choose your degree, click the symbol, which is what it says to do.
  • Start date: The day you became an official student at your school. It could be the date you finished all the paperwork to get into the school or the date your first class started. GMC won't check this, so keep the year correct and put in a number that is close. But if you want to be sure, you can find this information in the student's section of your medical college.
  • Finish date: Most of the time, it's the last day of the month before your finals started. Puzzled? Let me clarify. For example, the finals for your regular batch were in January 2017. That means you have until December 31, 2016, to finish. Again, you can always ask the student's admin/section or the principal's office to clarify these dates, and GMC will not do so.
  • Date Passed: This is an important date. If it says so on your certificate, then it's a good thing. But if it isn't, you'll have to look at your academic transcript, which shows the date your results were made public. It is also written on the score sheet for your last professional test. In the end, if the date you passed your PMQ is not written on your PMQ certificate, your passed date is the date the results were published.

After you fill out all of these fields, the last page will say "Account created."

Book your PLAB 1 exam

Sign in to your brand-new GMC Online Account. On the left, click on the "My Tests" tab and add your IELTS/OET information. From "My Tests," you can then sign up for PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 in the future. When you book, pay attention to the place and date.

Choose the IELTS or OET test you took. It will then ask you for information about that test, and then it will take you to a list of dates. You can book PLAB from there.

If you do not see any dates that means it is not available for you. Unfortunately in that case, all you can do is wait. Keep an eye out in social media or GMC’s website to get notified when the dates will get available to book.

FAQ's

Do I need to pay for PLAB with my own credit card?

Nope. It could belong to anyone. But there is no way to do a bank deposit with a CREDIT CARD or UK DEBIT CARD. Visa and MasterCard can be used at GMC. You can only use credit cards from outside the country, but debit cards can be used if online transactions are allowed (Check with your bank). If you are paying from outside of the country, I would recommend that the credit card holder call the bank before making the payment. Sometimes the government blocks transactions from outside of the country.

Can I open a GMC Online Account while I'm still in medical school?

You can't do that. To sign up for a GMC online account, you must have a primary medical qualification.

How does GMC verify my IELTS/OET score?

It is done by a machine. If you can still book your PLAB 1, you don't need to worry about that.

How can I change the date of my PLAB 1 test?

If you want to change the date of your exam, you must cancel your spot, pay the cancellation fee, and book again. Since you've already paid for the test, the cancellation fee is taken from what you've already paid. If you cancel 83 days before the exam, you'll get a full refund. If you cancel between 83 and 57 days before the exam, you'll get 50% of your money back. If you cancel less than 57 days before the exam, you won't get any money back at all.
